  • My dad left my mom on September 1st this year. He'd waited until I'd moved out, made arrangements to get the keys to a new apartment, and then, on Tuesday called my mom and said "I'm not coming home tonight." They were supposed to go golfing, but that was over-shadowed by him moving out.

It's interesting to me, because aside from the first of the month being a typical day to start paying rent, my dad and I had also had a conversation recently about September. We both felt that September, and not January, was a much more appropriate "start of the year" month. School starts in September, first of all. Secondly, it seems that everyone always waits the whole year for summer to come - it's the last thing, the time when people relax. September is the end of all that. It's when people start getting down to business again. My birthday is in September, so I guess I'm biased. My dad's birthday is in October, and I guess he thinks that's close enough to be a little biased too.

So, I can't help but notice that my dad chose to leave my mom on the first day of the "new year." Was this his New Year's resolution?
